Om Birla: Kota to the Lok Sabha
Early Political Involvement:
At 17, re-elected Lok Sabha Speaker from Rajasthan, Om Birla entered politics as a student leader in 1979 when he was elected president of the students’ association at Kota’s Government Senior Secondary School,thus having a strong RSS background at top. In 1987, Birla became district president of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha—BJP’s youth wing. He led a team during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement to Ayodhya and was imprisoned for the same.
State-Level Politics
Before his national-level success, Birla served as a three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Rajasthan, winning elections from the Kota South seat in 2003, 2008, and 2013. His political journey reflects his dedication and rising influence within the BJP.
Lok Sabha Journey
In the 2014 general elections, Birla was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rajasthan’s Kota South constituency. His proactive leadership in cooperative societies in Rajasthan and Gujarat earned him a stellar reputation.
Speaker of the Lok Sabha
He took over as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha in 2019, and his unanimously elected candidature has now entered its second term, making him the first presiding officer to be re-elected within a span of two decades. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the re-election of Birla while emphasizing his overarching role in the Lower House.
